Meet the Outreach Team
Byron is our Outreach Manager, focusing on bringing Science Alive programming to curious minds throughout Canterbury! He’s passionate about supporting active learning, and loves asking questions to dive deeper.
When not at work, you'll likely find him out and about enjoying the natural world with two dogs following closely behind.
What's one piece of advice you live by?
In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
I love this because it's a reminder that anything is possible, and that kindness and empathy are a great foundation from which to achieve your dreams.
What sparked your interest in science or learning?
I remember my first biology class where we dove into cellular structure. I was immediately hooked by how complex, and downright strange the different components of a cell are. This was the first time I remember that I realised how fascinating the world can be when you dive a little deeper and look closely at how beautiful and intricate life can be.
What's your niche interest?
College basketball in the US. I grew up playing basketball and developed a rabid fandom for the school I attended, Michigan State University. I faithfully watch every game and embarrassingly get quite invested in the ebbs and flows of the season. I can tell you more than you want to hear about each player and the trajectory of their career thus far. Go Green!
What's your favourite way to learn something new?
I love to get my hands dirty. Whenever I have the chance to try something out, I feel more connected to it and the learning happens on a deeper level. Through tactile engagement I find ways to rationalize new information in palatable ways that make sense to me. It's through this lens that I love to create learning opportunities for others so that we can enjoy aha moments together.
Siôn is our STEM Educator who moves between both the content and outreach worlds to write, and deliver, engaging educational experiences!
He’s passionate about breaking down tough scientific concepts into digestible chunks, and loves the challenge of finding creative ways to do so. When he’s not at work, you’ll likely find him at a music festival.
If the team were stranded on a desert island, what role would you play?
Hut-builder? I do love an interior design challenge.
Favourite way to spend a day off?
Breakfast, second breakfast, beach, charcuterie board, gig? All with wonderfully selected company.
What’s a fun fact about you that usually surprises people?
Welsh was my first language.
Moron! (Carrot in Welsh).
If you could time travel to any scientific discovery, which would you witness?
Does fire count? There probably wouldn’t be much talking but I think everyone would be very excited.
