Introduction
During Matariki, we take time to reflect on the lives of our loved ones who are no longer with us and celebrate the memories they’ve left behind. Pōhutukawa is the name of the special star that is connected to those who have passed on.
In this activity, you’ll create your own memory time capsule filled with memories, stories, and taonga (treasures) to honour loved ones and past generations. You’ll seal it up and choose a date in the future to open it, so you can remember and reflect again.
What You Will Need
- Pouaka hū - Shoebox or jar
- Mahi toi - Crafting supplies
- Taonga - Items that remind you of loved ones
Instructions
Let's begin!
- First decorate your container to make it special and personal.
- Gather your memories by writing or drawing stories about loved ones who have passed on, or special moments with your whānau. You can also include small items that represent your life right now—like a photo, a special shell, or a drawing.
- Carefully place your papers and treasures into the container. These are memories for your future self to discover!
- Close the container and seal it with tape or string. Decide how long you want to wait before opening it again—you might choose next Matariki or you may want to wait 5 years. Write the “open date” clearly on the lid or a tag.
- Find a good spot where it won’t get lost or damaged. A drawer, cupboard, or bookshelf is perfect!
Reflect
- How did this activity make you feel?
- What was the favourite thing your were reminded of while gathering your time capsule items?
- Why do you think it's important to remember and honour the past?
Purpose and Connection
The rise of Matariki is a time to reflect. Inspired by this, and the whetū Pōhutukawa, this activity allows tamariki to reflect on those who came before us, who have paved the way. This activity encourages reflection, a key tool in science and experimentation.
