Biology meets Engineering with STEM Wana Trust

Event Information

Join STEM Wana Trust for an enlightening evening where you'll have the chance to engage with engineers, ecologists and freshwater technicians. It is the chance to hear about how engineers work with environmental scientists and understand how the work of PhD students are valuable for nation wide organisations and companies.

Siobhan Nuri is a freshwater technician and currently enrolled in a PhD at the University of Waikato. Her thesis research is focusing on providing insights into the early life histories of longfin and shortfin tuna. Siobhan is passionate about freshwater fisheries and te taiao. In 2020, Siobhan was lead author on a paper published in the NZ Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research entitled ‘Comparison of bathyscope and snorkelling methods for iwi monitoring of kākahi populations in the shallow littorals of Lake Rotorua and Rotoiti’. She was also awarded the Department of Conservation’s Best Contribution to Conservation award at the 2020 NZ Freshwater Science Society Conference.

Katherine Doerr is an engineer and project manager for the large new elver trap at Matahina Dam for Manawa. Katherine has ten years experience in the renewables industry and worked on a range of projects in variety of countries and with different technologies. She enjoys the challenge of managing complex engineering projects which give her the opportunity to combine her commercial and engineering skills.

Caleb Sjardin is an Environmental Scientist and Head of Environment at Manawa.

This event hosted by STEM Wana Trust is the perfect event for high-school and university students to get inspired and meet role models, but also for adults that are eager to explore more about engineering and the environment.
