Science Senses InformationSenses information

Find science information on all the human senses topics that Science Alive covers. This includes education classes, resources we hire, exhibit examples, interesting senses facts, fun activities, experiments, useful links and general senses information.

Senses education classes: See our education section for more

Super Senses - Years 1-3

Stimulate your brain as you use your five senses to explore the world around us.
Key Concepts: sight, hearing, touch, small and taste.

Lets Make Noise (early childhood)

Look at how sound travels and how we recognise the different sounds. Experiment with lots of different activities and instruments to find out how we get different pitches.

Senses exhibit examples: See our exhibitions page for more

Whisper Dishes - Two concave fiberglass dishes face each other across the room. When you speak softly into the whisper dish the dish rebounds the sound waves that you have created directly to the opposite dish.

Bongo Pipes - Seven PVC pipes of differing lengths are mounted on a frame. By striking the end of the pipe with a bat each pipe produces a different note.

Listening Pipes - By listening at one end of different lengths of pipe a distinctive note can be heard when the ambient surround sound is collected along the pipe.

Telephants - Talk to a friend down an elephants trunk on the Telephant exchange. The exchange is colour coded, so if you are at a pink Telephant and would like to talk to a blue Telephant you would plug in the blue trunk. The four Telephants would enhance any children's area. other combinations are possible down to two telephants

Stringless Harp – Make the sound of your choice of over 100 instruments while playing this impressive, stringless harp.

Rotating Aimes Windows - The rotating Aimes window seems to only oscillate when seen from a distance.

Horse's Tail - The visitor can only tell the difference between the shades of gray when the "Horses tail" is moved to one side.

Coloured Words - On a clear panel names of colours are printed in ink that isn't the colour the words describe. Quickly and out loud describe the colours the words are printed in. Look at the other side and repeat the exercise.

Mirror Writer - Try to write or draw by only looking at a mirror.

Reaction Tester - People can test how close they can stop a flashing line of green lights to the red marker. The speed of the green light flashes can be changed.

Thread the Needle - Try to thread the wooden "thread" into the eye of the needle with one eye closed and then both eyes open.

Optical spinners - The mind plays tricks when the shapes on the disks are rotated.
