Find science information on all the light topics that Science Alive covers. This includes education classes, resources we hire, exhibit examples, interesting light facts, fun activities, experiments, useful links and general light information.

Light education classes: See our education section for more

Light & Vision - Years 3-8

Explore light as a physical phenomenon and find out how our eyes receive images.
Key Concepts: sources of light, reflection and refraction, fibre optics, optical illusions, structure of the eye.

Light exhibit examples: See our exhibitions page for more

Bendy Mirror - The visitors face and body is distorted when the flex mirror is bent in two places.

Black Box - Look in the black hole and the visitor sees nothing. Open the box, the light gets in and it is brightly coloured inside.

Face Mixer - Two people sit opposite each other in an especially designed "head" and by turning up a touch sensor light, they can merge each others face so they match and mix.

Rainbow Kaleidoscope - This free standing scope contains mirrors in a triangular configuration and produces multiple spectra, produced by having a diffraction grading at one end.

Fresnel Lense - The visitor can look through the giant lense and if anything or anybody (or part) is within its focal length will be magnified.

Giant Kaleidoscope - Giant mirrors are mounted on the inside of a triangle.

Antigravity Mirror - Large mirrors placed at right angles to one another allowing people to see themselves floating on air. The mirrors create an opposite image.

Light kits and equipment: See our resources section for more

Binoculars (set of 10), Eye Model, Light & Vision Kit.

Interactive Light game:
