Science Alive! purchased the former Christchurch railway station from RailCorp NZ in 1991. Since then Science Alive! has completely renovated the rental accommodation and added other facilities to the centre.

The building has four main levels: the ground floor and three other levels. All can be accessed from either the Moorhouse Avenue entrance or from the Science Alive! - Hoyts private car park.
