Starlab Planetarium

Experience the wonder of the night sky in a unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium.

  • Starlab is an inflatable blacked-out dome with stars, planets and the Moon projected onto the ceiling to simulate the night sky.
  • Starlab requires an indoor venue and is best set up in a hall or library with a high ceiling.
  • Starlab can hole up to 30 people per session.
  • A minimum of 60 students per day is required to make the Starlab viable.
  • Starlab can be used onsite at Science Alive! in conjunction with other space programmes.

Starlab 1 - The Night Sky

Key Concepts: day and night, constellations and the Moon.

Starlab 2 - Planets and Constellations

Key Concepts: day and night, the Earth's rotation, constellations, the Moon, and visible planets in the night sky.

Starlab 3 - Astronomy

Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium.
Key Concepts: day and night, the Earth's rotation, constellations, the Moon, the Milky Way galaxy, and visible planets in the night sky.

Starlab 4 - NCEA

Key Concepts:earth's position in the solar system, star size and temperature, nebulae, galaxies, constellations and visible planets. This session uses our Global imagination Magic Planet digital projector to show the surface of the planets in our solar system.

Matariki Starlab

Years 3-6
Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium with a Maori focus.
Key Concepts: Matariki and other constellations, the night sky's role in Maori navigation, changing seasons, predicting weather, and keeping track of time. Astronomical units used in measuring distances. The Moon and its phases, the visible planets in the night sky.
