Brian Mason Discovery Dome

Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Discovery Planetarium.

  • The Discovery Dome allows us to project stars, planets and the Moon all around you to simulate the night sky.

  • The Discovery Dome requires an indoor venue and is best set up in a hall or library with a high ceiling (Minimum space, 7 m diameter x 4 m high)

  • The Discovery Dome can hold up to 30 students and teachers per session. A minimum of 60 students per day is required.

  • Starlab programmes can be used onsite at Science Alive! in conjunction with other space programmes.

Starlab Programmes

Starlab 1 - The Night Sky

Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium.
Key Concepts: day and night, constellations and the Moon.
Learning Intentions

Starlab 2 - Planets and Constellations

Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium.
Key Concepts: day and night, the Earth's rotation, constellations, the Moon, and visible planets in the night sky.

Starlab 3 - Astronomy

Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium.
Key Concepts: day and night, the Earth's rotation, constellations, the Moon, the Milky Way galaxy, and visible planets in the night sky.

Starlab 4 - High School Programme

Key Concepts:earth's position in the solar system, star size and temperature, nebulae, galaxies, constellations and planets.

Matariki Starlab

Years 3-6
Experience the wonder of the night sky in the unique setting of the Starlab Planetarium with a Maori focus.
Key Concepts: Matariki and other constellations, the night sky's role in Maori navigation, changing seasons, and keeping track of time. The Moon and its phases, the visible planets in the night sky.
